Mid Valley Southkey guide for families: hours, parking, the bus and what to do with kids

Two of our homestays are at Southkey Mosaic Residence, near The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey in Johor Bahru. This is what we tell families before they go: the opening hours, what parking costs, the bus from the checkpoint and where the children can use up their energy.

The basics

The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey opened on 23 April 2019. It is an IGB mall, from the group behind Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, and IGB REIT has owned it since 20 November 2025. Analysts' notes on that sale put the lettable area at 1.53 million sq ft, which is why a first visit takes longer than you planned.

One thing to know before you hunt for a shop. The directory calls the top floor 3M, for third floor mezzanine, and blogs often call the same floor Level 4. Unit numbers that start with TM are up there, and that is where most of the children's places are.

Getting there from the JB checkpoint

By bus or train from Singapore you arrive at JB CIQ, which connects to JB Sentral. Trip.com's guide of September 2026 puts the mall 15 to 25 minutes away by road, and the traffic decides which.

The J15 bus

The BAS.MY J15, run by Causeway Link, started on 30 September 2025 and runs between JB Sentral Bus Terminal and the mall. Land Transport Guru's route page, updated in January 2026, records a bus every 20 minutes and a top fare of RM1.70. The first bus leaves JB Sentral at 5am and the last at 12.20am. Coming back, the last bus leaves the mall at 11.20pm, so a late film still gets you home if you watch the clock. Pay in cash or tap a Visa or Mastercard.

At JB Sentral the J15 boards from the roadside area the terminal labels Side, not from a numbered bay. At the mall the stops are named SOGO Mid Valley and MBSB Mid Valley.

Older guides send you to bus T21 at RM3. That route was renumbered J21 and no longer serves the mall. The mall's own MV2 shuttle was suspended in March 2020 and Land Transport Guru shows no return. Ignore both.

Grab

We have not found a recent published fare worth quoting, so check the app before you leave the terminal. A family with luggage should book the car, and a group of more than four needs a six-seater or two cars.

From Singapore

There is no direct public bus from Singapore to the mall that we could confirm. The free shuttle from Kranji that some posts still mention was a promotion that ended on 11 May 2025. TheSmartLocal reported in June 2026 that the mall is one of four pick-up points on the Malaysian side for Singapore cross-border taxis, which helps on the way home.

Driving, cross at Woodlands. The mall's website gives three approaches: the North-South Highway by way of the Eastern Dispersal Link, the Tebrau Expressway, and the Johor Bahru East Coast Highway by way of Jalan Bakar Batu.

Parking

Parking here is cheap for a city mall, and the mall publishes the rates itself.

Car parkWeekdaysWeekends and public holidays
Mall car parkRM2 for the first 3 hours, then RM1 an hourRM3 for the first 3 hours, then RM1 an hour
Outdoor car park, Gate 6RM3 all dayRM3 all day

Four hours on a Saturday costs RM4. A full 10am to 10pm day costs RM12, or RM11 on a weekday. The same twelve hours at KSL City Mall comes to RM26.40 at the rate in our KSL City Mall guide.

These are the rates on the mall's website as we read it on 12 October 2026. The page carries no date of its own, so read the board on your way in.

What to do with children

Take the lift to the top floor first. Most of what a child wants is on that one level.

Kiddytopia takes children aged 2 and up. Visit Johor's listing gives its hours as 10am to 10pm from Tuesday to Sunday, with a 10.30am start on Mondays. The two published prices are a year apart and do not agree, so budget RM48 a child and be pleased if it is less.

The go-kart track is 200 metres and the karts top out at 8 km/h, so it is for small drivers and not for teenagers. Klook's listing says a child under 100 cm rides with an adult.

The GSC here has a hall called PlayPlus with cuddle couches for families. TheSmartLocal's cinema guide of August 2026 says it runs sensory-friendly screenings on the second Sunday of each month, with the lights left low and the sound turned down. If you have a child who finds a normal cinema too much, that is the session to book.

Two free things. Little Day Out notes a small playground in the children's section of SOGO. And the LEGO Store on the Ground floor and Toys"R"Us on Level 2 will each hold a child for twenty minutes while one adult queues for lunch.

Food, groceries and the dull essentials

Village Grocer is on the Lower Ground floor, on the same level as Harvey Norman. For a group of six or seven that matters more than any restaurant list: water, fruit and breakfast things are sorted before you go back to the apartment.

PopCorn Food Hall on Level 3 is the easy answer for a mixed group, because everyone orders from a different stall and sits at one table. A September 2026 food guide says halal and non-halal outlets are both easy to find in the mall. Check the sign at each outlet if it matters to you. The same guide lists Oriental Kopi opening at 9am, an hour before the mall, if you want breakfast out.

Trip.com's guide lists information counters on the Ground floor that lend strollers and wheelchairs and store luggage, a nursing room on the south side of the top floor and a surau on the north side of Level 2. It gives no prices, so ask at the counter.

A wet afternoon, planned

  1. 10am. Park and go straight up to Kiddytopia while the children are fresh and the floor is quiet.
  2. 12.30pm. Lunch at PopCorn Food Hall on Level 3.
  3. 2pm. A film at GSC, or back to the apartment for a nap if yours are small.
  4. 4.30pm. One game at Supreme Bowl, or two rounds on the go-karts.
  5. 6pm. Village Grocer for tomorrow's breakfast and drinking water.
  6. 7pm. Dinner in the mall, then home.

If you drove and stayed from 10am to 8pm, the parking for that day is RM9 on a weekday and RM10 at the weekend.

What is changing

KSL or Southkey?

Families ask us which city base to pick. KSL City Mall has the Dinosaur Alive water park upstairs and a night market at the door every Monday. Southkey has the larger mall, the bowling lanes, the IMAX screen and parking at less than half the price for a long day. You can sleep at one and spend an afternoon at the other. Our Johor Bahru family itinerary shows how to fit both into a weekend.

If Legoland is the main event, neither is right. Stay in Medini and read our Legoland Malaysia family guide.

Staying at Southkey

Our two homestays near Mid Valley Southkey are whole apartments at Southkey Mosaic Residence:

Check-in is after 3pm and check-out is before 12pm. Southkey suits a shopping weekend, a wet-weather trip or a group that wants the Causeway close and a big mall to fall back on.
